Learning Log 7

During this past 3 to 4 months , throughout all thick and thin , we have finally completed our assignment . Working on the backdrop , tablecloth , costumes and props , not forgetting our acting too ! This has been one exhilarating rollercoaster ride , having to find a venue to meet was one of our problems but we did it , as a director , it has been quite stressful trying to keep everyone cooperate in the group , but I am fortunate to have a wonderful group . Even a little contribution had help the group a lot . The waiting for our turn to act was one extremely stressful moment , we had to prepare our props , get dress and practice our lines . We were stressed that we kept losing things , but lucky we manage to find them before rehearsal , we barely had time for one rehearsal , with many pairs of eyes staring at us , I am sure we all have butterflies in our stomach , seeing my group performed greatly , I know that our efforts were not in vain . I felt great that we had such a project , if there is still more projects like this , i would do it .

I have learnt that literary devices is used to convey meaning to the reader . Literary devices can be imagery and figurative language or sound devices . The example of the literary devices are simile ,personification , symbol , metaphor , visual , kinestatic , tactile , auditory , olfactory , gustatory , rhythm , rhyme , alliteration , onomatopoeia and tone .

Simile is a comparison between two different things by using 'like' and 'as' .

Personification is the description of inanimate object as though they are human beings .

Symbol is an object that stand for something else , normally more abstract .

Metaphor is the qualities of an object applied to the other .

Visual is the description to do with what we see.

Kinestatic is description to do with movement .

Tactile is the desription to do with what we touch .

Auditory is describing what we hear .

Olfactory is describing what we smell .

Gustatory is the descriptions to do with sensations of flavour or texture inside the mouth .

Rhythm is the beats or pattern of pause (clapping) when you read a passage or poem.

Rhyme is the similarity of ending sounds existing between two words .

Alliteration would be the repetition of consonant sounds , producing a rhythmical effect .

Onomatopoeia is the formation of words , that echo the sound that they describes.

Tone is the oral expression of mood , attitude or the point of view .

After reading the notes about "The Unseen" , I have learnt that when approaching an unseen poem , read the poem at least twice . Read through without stopping for the first time and for second time , choose words and phrases that is difficult to understand or interesting . Take note of your feelings to where your attention is drawn to . Make notes but try to make sure if they are short and sweet .

Read the poem swiftly to get an idea of what the text is about for first reading , get a better understanding , observe the mood and setting if the poem and see how the characters are related for second reading . At the third reading , take a look at the questions on the text , take notes in the poem where you may find the answer . Then try to understand the meaning of the difficult words .

I also learn to use the IBC and PEEL technique . IBC which means Introduction, Body and Conclusion while PEEL means Point ,Explain/Elaborate , Evidence/Example , Link .

From Poem A, B and C , I have learnt how to use the techniques and apply to the poems .

Today , due to a few SYF Chinese orchestra members need to go by 1.15 , we have to bring some of our class "witches" performance to be at the first period of the day . To be honest , my group did not did well as expected as we are unable to meet up , so we did our own costume individually then we see where our costume needs improvements . Even though we used garbage bag as clothes , but we spiced it up by cutting off all the sides , not just one hole on each side to put our arms in , then we used a bright yellow piece of plastic-rope to tie around our waist to not just to prevent the garbage bag from flying around against the wind but also to stand out from other people also wearing garbage bag . I think among the class Izzul had the most confidence , he manages to get our attention by starting off with an "evil laugh" . The group with the best costume has to be mieko and her group members .

Today , Mrs Woo showed some examples of "Learning Log 2" from other classes . Honestly , I think my work is a one quarter compared to the other classes . They write for more thn 2 paragraphs , while mine is just one paragraph . They can elaborate a 35 minute lesson into two - three paragraphs.

After showing the examples , Mrs Woo did a file check with us and had gone through our literature common test topics , the topics consist of cinquain , memorising Act 1 Scene 1 of macbeth ( original text ) and Act 2 Scene 2 would be like a conprehension type question , with plot , characterisation and meanings.

After goining through the topics , Mrs Woo got us in groups to present our "predictions " we had discussed last lesson. Some of our predictions sounded like fiction and made up .For Macbeth ,he heard the predictions from the three witches that he was gonna be king . He killed everyone just to be king ... As always , time goes by fast when we are having fun , and we did not have time to see everyone's prediction or else we may have seen better prediction from other people.

Today, we learnt that Macbeth believed the three witches’ superstitions that he was going to be king someday , after hearing the superstition , Macbeth killed anyone who tries to take his place as king . Some of the classmates in our class acted out as the three witches in act 1 scene 1 . Their acting may bring some laughter in our class but they brought out the act 1 scene 1 quite profoundly. We clapped for them as they made an effort to stand in front of the class and act out the scene . They showed a remarkable bravery despite knowing they may humiliate themselves . We did not have enough time to see more of our classmates to act or we may have see more people with acting talents .

During the literature lesson on Cinquain , I have learnt that Cinquain starts with a subject ,with one word , the next line contains a two word action ,followed by a three word feeling on the next line , then a four word description on the next line and finally on a last line ,a one word to describe the subject on the first line .The lesson are fun and interesting ,especially the group work , we learnt to respect each other's opinion ,working as a team and get the job done .From my side of view, the lessons can be improve by giving more Cinquain related activities and projects . That way ,we can fully understand the meaning of Cinquain.
